About The CSI

The Duke Kunshan University Climate and Sustainability Initiative (CSI) was officially launched in April 2024 with the support of the DKU leadership and inspired by Duke University’s milestone achievement in reaching carbon neutrality. Since its establishment, the CSI has made significant progress promoting sustainable development through education, research, campus operations, and external engagement. It has also engaged in international cooperation with other higher education institutions. Through sharing experiences and knowledge exchanges, the CSI seeks to contribute to a more sustainable world by fulfilling its mission as an educator.

In terms of education, DKU offered 28 courses on sustainability and the environment in the 24/25 academic year. Additionally, based on a survey conducted by the CSI in 2024, there are around 50 courses in non-environmental disciplines that have integrated sustainability issues into their syllabi. The CSI also gathered data from the Signature Work Office showing that about 17% and 15% of students’ signature works were related to sustainability issues in 2024 and 2025, respectively. In 2024, CSI also organized DKU’s first-ever Sustainability Day during orientation, welcoming over 600 new students to the various sustainability aspects of DKU.

In terms of research, the DKU Environmental Research Center (ERC) published over 240 publications in 2024, covering topics ranging from the natural sciences to the social sciences. These works addressed various aspects of environmental issues, including governance, economics, and conservation efforts, among others. With 27 DKU faculty members and 12 Duke adjunct faculty members, the ERC has a wealth of intellectual resources, providing ample learning and research opportunities for students. For example, approximately 140 students, both undergraduate and graduate, were involved in environmental and sustainability research under the guidance of ERC faculty.

Sustainability is a core part of DKU’s identity. Since its founding, DKU has integrated sustainability into campus design, setting a precedent for sustainable development within China's higher education sector. As the first university in the country to receive LEED certification for both its design and construction and for its operation and management, DKU has installed energy-efficient technologies, advanced air and water purification systems, and incorporated pioneering sponge city and anti-bird collision designs. More recently, it has welcomed a project that aims to develop campus biodiversity. These features reflect its efforts to minimize climate, and ecological impacts and promote a harmonious relationship between campus infrastructure and the environment.

The CSI builds on and expand these efforts by launching and implementing more sustainability projects on campus through a multi-stakeholder, broadly consultative approach involving students, faculty, and staff. In this way, DKU contributes to leading the international movement for sustainable development and fulfilling the Chinese government's vision of building an Ecological Civilization.

Vision

Our vision is to integrate sustainability into every facet of campus life - including education, research, operations, and societal engagement. By facilitating and promoting collective action among students, faculty, and staff, we aim to spearhead campus-wide sustainability initiatives and champion DKU’s ambition to set a precedent as a leading 'Green University' in China.

Mission and Mandate

We will take the lead in designing, formulating, and implementing DKU’s sustainable development pathway, strategic plans, and climate commitments under the guidance of the DKU leadership. By leveraging DKU's rich intellectual resources, the CSI will support the university in enhancing the well-being of its residents, the local community, and beyond.

The CSI works through an Executive Committee and the DKU Sustainability Committee, which drive the development and implementation of DKU’s sustainability strategy. It also facilitates and oversees sustainability-related projects on campus, in collaboration with campus operations. Additionally, it functions as a knowledge hub, connecting various operational, academic, and student experience departments to enable the smooth and harmonious development of bottom-up, faculty-led and student-led sustainability initiatives. The CSI aims to help DKU pursue both short- and long-term initiatives that embed sustainability values into the university’s core ethos.

DKU Sustainability Governance Structure

The current sustainability governance structure at DKU leverages the rich intellectual resources of the DKU community and adopts a bottom-up approach to drive institutional change toward sustainable development.

The CSI Executive Committee, consisting of seven members, leads the organization of the DKU Sustainability Committee’s work. The Sustainability Committee includes 32 members nominated from faculty, staff, and students, with a two-year appointment (except for students, who have a one-year appointment). It serves as an advisory body to the CSI Executive Committee, ensuring a broad and consultative process in advancing sustainability at DKU. The Sustainability Academy Fellowship, made up of various faculty members with expertise in different aspects of sustainability, supports the Sustainability Committee by providing expert input for drafting sustainability strategies for DKU, as well as offering technical knowledge for relevant sustainability projects on campus.

Additionally, the CSI Executive Committee coordinates and matches suitable projects with the respective sustainability fellows. Once these projects receive approval from DKU leadership, the CSI Executive Committee takes the lead of project implementation by closely collaborating with and mobilizing various DKU offices and groups.

This governance structure creates the necessary foundation to accelerate sustainable development at DKU - one that is inclusive, innovative, and comprehensive.
